In 1825, the Eenens family, wealthy cloth-makers, acquired market garden land on the Chaussée de Haecht. At the time, Schaerbeek was still very rural. In the centre of the park, they had the central building of a bourgeois house built in the neoclassical style, as well as the outbuildings: to the left, the sheds and to the right, the stables. Their son, Lieutenant General Alexis-Michel Eenens, added two wings to the villa, as well as a porch and a third storey. But in 1862, when the Rue Royale Sainte-Marie was built, the house's garden was cut off. When the General died, Thérèse Eenens (his daughter) and her husband, the magistrate Georges Terlinden, inherited the house. They had a new square tower added to the house, as well as an annex adjoining the stables: the saddlery, which is now an estaminet. In 1950, the property was acquired by the municipality of Schaerbeek and the villa was renamed "Maison des Arts". The municipality added a fountain.

Today, the Maison des Arts is home to the French Cultural Service, which organises art exhibitions there, and since 2015 the building has been fully listed by Monuments et Sites.

This tour is adapted for visually impaired persons and incorporates tactile aids, such as touching original details and relief images.

The tour will be accompanied by a guide trained by our specialist partner Eqla Asbl.
